THE HISTORY OF REIKI
Rediscovered in the 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Buddhist monk, was teaching a class and was perplexed by a question of his student asking how did Jesus perform all his miracles. Perplexed and not sure of the answer, Dr. Usui went on a 21-day meditation and fasting quest to the holy mountains of Kori Yama, Japan. It was on the 21st day when he began to feel frustrated with his situation and found his answer. While sitting underneath a spring waterfall Usui felt a new sensation of energies coming down on the top of his head that enlightened every cell in his body with Reiki Ryoho, which is the ability to heal.
After returning to the monestary, he explained his new enlightenment that was felt he decided to go to a beggar city, where the Great Genji fire is famous for, in the slums of Kyoto, to treat beggars and help them lead a better life with his findings of new enlightenment. He spent 7 years in the slums, treating many illnesses.
For Usui, reiki was a spiritual practice – an opportunity for each person to awaken their true natural inner light.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A REIKI SESSION: HOW TO PREPARE
Typically, you will be asked to sign a consent form and a discussion generally happens during the initial session. During this discussion, is when your practitioner will describe what to expect and give you opportunity to discuss any specific problems or issues you are experiencing. You also may be asked for what you are hoping to achieve or to set an intention. Each practitioner has a different approach their methods, so it is important to find the one that feels right to you. Not every practitioner will feel good or provide as much as one versus the other to your needs.
Sessions can last from 45-90 minutes.
Diagnosis is not part of Reiki practice. Though, your practitioner may suggest common-sense suggestions for the after care, such as drinking water and following your body’s needs.
For the actual session, you will rest comfortably on a massage table, starting on your back, with your shoes removed. Reiki can also be performed with the client sitting comfortably in a chair. Unlike massage therapy, there is no manipulation to the muscle performed.
Comfortable, loose fitting clothing is highly recommended.
A session can either be hands-on, where the Reiki Practitioner will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off where they will hold her hands slightly above the body. If you prefer not to be touched, if you have any sensitive areas in your body, it is important to indicate this prior to beginning.
The session will then proceed with moving through specific Reiki hand positions typically beginning at your head, or feet, or other.
During the session, you may feel a plethora of sensations. This is because as Reiki energies flow between Practitioner and you as the recipient, the two bodies may respond or react with particular sensations felt through the experience.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND REIKI
What people generally don’t expect from a Reiki session is understanding how it works, yet know they feel good.
Reiki works like a thermostat that regulates the body. Much like a furnace that automatically turns on and off to regulate the temperature, reiki flows slowly or rapidly-as-needed- to dispense balancing energies. Like a pendulum swinging back and forth, Reiki sometimes moves erratically, other times smoothing.

If you have difficulty feeling sensations while receiving treatment, try closing your eyes. Keeping your eyes shut eliminates visual distractions and allows you to focus on your initial intention.
As the session progresses, relaxation is a common feeling. If at any point you become uncomfortable, keeping open communication is important. Your Reiki Practitioner is there to assist in every aspect to make sure your special time is accommodated for and your comfort is top priority. They are able to assist with special scented oils, heating pad, blankets, eye pillow, rice pack, bolster under the knees, etc.
Your state will shift naturally. Meanwhile, feel free to daydream, enjoy the music, aroma, or simply observe your breath or the sensations you may be experiencing.
